Marelie Bester matriculated at Ficksburg High School in 2020. She is currently studying towards a Physics degree at Stellenbosch University.

Gary Ryan Blair once said: “Do more than is required. What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers merely following? The extra mile.”

Tell us a bit about yourself?

This quote embodies the type of person that I am. I am hard-working, self-disciplined and committed to achieve my goals. I developed my love for mathematics and physics in high school. I want to acknowledge my high school teachers for the excitement they shared while teaching their various subjects. Their enthusiasm to teach us and make us understand more created a ripple effect in my life. It encouraged me to go the extra mile when studying, understanding concepts better and to be more curious. I get excited when I explore the world of science and I enjoy solving problems. At the end of my Grade 11 year, I realised that I wanted to become a medical physicist. I am currently studying Laser, Radiation, Nuclear and Health Physics. My plan is to do my Honours degree in Radiation and Health Physics and then my Masters in Medical Physics. I would like to continue to do research in my field of study. I want to thank NSTF for making me part of the Brilliants programme. This is an exciting opportunity that serves as inspiration to always continue learning and working hard.
