National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF)

Phila Mbuyisa is fascinated with the human body and hopes to one day come up with a useful medical invention or two to improve people’s lives.

Phila Mbuyisa matriculated at Nsalamanga High School in KwaZulu-Natal. He is studying medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He was selected as one of the students for the NSTF’s Brilliants Programme in 2022.

“I want to develop my knowledge of the medical field and hopefully become a specialist, and perhaps come up with useful medical inventions.”

  

Seeing how far science has develoed inspires me, as well as the history of scientists and their perseverance.

 

Tell us a bit about your school?

Nsalamanga High School is located on the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal. This is a Quintile 1 school. It offers education while teaching students about respect and the importance of sticking to your values as an African child.

Why do you think some people have a problem with math and science? What would you do to solve the problem?

Some people have a problem with Maths and Science because they are influenced by people who have tried the subjects once and failed. These subjects require your undivided time in order to understand better. To solve this problem, I think it will be wise to show people the beauty of science and maths. There are many fascinating things in this world that were brought about by science and maths.

Why did you enjoy science and maths?

I enjoy science and maths because the ‘little’ theory that it has, is straightforward. One thing leads to another.

What inspires you?

Seeing how far science has developed inspires me, as well as the history of scientists and their perseverance

Why did you choose the course you are studying?

I chose to study medicine because I am fascinated with the human body, specifically the human heart. I want to develop my knowledge in this field and hopefully become a specialist and perhaps come up with useful medical inventions.

A message to South African youth?

Step up, get out of your comfort zone and work towards your dreams. You can enjoy your comfort zone once you’ve achieved your goals.

Any tips for learners in grades 11 and 12?

Don’t rest on your laurels, study smart. Find a way to make studying more interesting so that it can yield better results.

Use past papers to practice and check your answers. Engage with your teachers.

What advice do you have for matriculants who have to apply for places in higher education institutions?

Do your best so that you will have many options at the beginning of the year. The competition is very tight and the country’s economy has deteriorated.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

In 10 years, I see myself working towards becoming a medical specialist.

Consistency in your work and simply having dreams supported by minor goals.
