Sandiso would like to see primary healthcare gradually improve.

Sandiso is studying medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). He matriculated at Jojo Senior Secondary School in Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

“Excellence is based on improvements, obviously you need to go the extra mile in your studies.”

Explain why you chose the course/s you are studying?

I think I just have an interest in science, especially maths. Nonetheless, I was mostly influenced by my sister to pursue this degree, since she couldn’t the time.

Who or what inspired you to pursue these studies?

It is my sister, Zizile Gwanya together with Zakithi Jokose.

What would you like to see changed in the world, and how do you see yourself contributing to such a change?

I would like to see primary healthcare to gradually improve. This is possible through the creation of organisations that promote healthy living and educate the public about healthy lifestyles.

Where did you complete your schooling? (name of school and area where it is situated) Tell us a bit about this school and your teachers.

I completed school at Jojo Senior Secondary School located in Dundee at Mount Ayliff in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). It is merely overcrowded with limited educational resources.

What did you enjoy about physical science and maths at school?

This question brings a smile to my face! In my opinion, I acquired a good and solid background in maths and physical science. Thanks to Mr Ngubane. When I calculated, I just understood and with practise I merely mastered it.

Why do you think some people have problems doing well in maths and science? What advice do you have for school learners who struggle with these subjects?

Again, in my opinion, those who struggle with math and science did not grasp the basics, they just dislike the subjects or were told these subjects are difficult. Now they don’t even bother trying to understand the content.

Any tips for learners in grades 11 and 12?

Grade 11 and 12 learners must try to understand the content, and then proceed to doing exercises to master it. They should not stop practicing once they get the answers right, but rather continue until they can’t get them wrong!

What advice do you have for matriculants who have to apply for places in higher education institutions?

They must apply before the deadline. First, apply for the course you really want, then choose another one where you have a higher chance of being accepted. For those aiming to enrol in medicine or Actuarial Science – just make sure you get distinctions in all your subjects.

Understanding excellence – what makes an achiever?

I think everyone knows, but the process is not easy. Excellence is based on small improvements, obviously you need to go an extra mile on your studies.

A message to South African youth in general?

The old generation have invested in already existing technology. It is our turn now, let us research and contribute to the ready existing scientific knowledge.

A message to the teachers at your school/s?

They must keep up the good work – they are already sacrificing a lot of time to improve the performance of learners.

If you had ONE opportunity to speak directly to a very influential person, who would you choose and what would you say to them?

“Luxolo Mdolo, a medical doctor — I would say to him: ‘Thank you’ and encourage him to keep inspiring the youth.”
