Kamohelo would like to see technology become more accessible and inclusive.

Kamohelo is studying for a BSc (Computer Science, Data Science and Statistics) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He matriculated at Selelekela Senior Secondary School in Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State.

Explain why you chose the course/s you are studying?

Because I want to be a software engineer.

Who or what inspired you to pursue these studies?

The circumstances at home inspired me to work hard so my family can have a better life.”

What would you like to see changed in the world, and how do you see yourself contributing to such a change?

I would like to see technology become more accessible and inclusive. I would like to contribute to this development.

Where did you complete your schooling? (name of school and area where it is situated) Tell us a bit about this school and your teachers.

I completed my matric at Selelekela Senior Secondary School in Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State. My teachers were very supportive and always helped me whenever I needed anything.

What did you enjoy about physical science and maths at school?

In physical science, I really enjoyed mechanics, while in mathematics, I loved calculus and its diverse real-world applications.

Why do you think some people have problems doing well in mathematics and science? What advice do you have for school learners who struggle with these subjects?

The key to succeeding in these subjects is to always practice consistently and try to understand the concepts, not just to cram the methods.

Any tips for learners in grades 11 and 12?

Study smart and effectively – consistency is key.

What advice do you have for matriculants who have to apply for places in higher education institutions?

Don’t just apply to one or two, apply to all, and make sure you apply on time.

Understanding excellence – what makes an achiever?

Be disciplined and humble, don’t let pride stop you from asking for help.

A message to South African youth in general?

Hard work pays off forever.

A message to the teachers at your school/s?

Thank you for all your help and unwavering support, keep on keeping on.

If you had ONE opportunity to speak directly to a very influential person, who would you choose and what would you say to them?

Elon Musk, a businessman known for his leadership of Tesla, SpaceX, and X. I would tell him that he is my inspiration and that one day I aspire to be like him. I would ask him how he achieved his success and ask for general advices.
