I chose to study medicine because I want to become a medical doctor one day. The medical field is mainly based on service provision to the community, which therefore means it allows you to help people in a way that can change their lives. I really want to help those in need, especially old people. This career fits perfectly with my interests, abilities, strengths and intelligence and I hope I succeed one day.
I come from a very disadvantaged community with a local clinic, where a doctor visits only once a week. This is unfair to our Botshabelo community as there are many elderly people aged 60 and above who require regular medical attention due to age-related illnesses. It is heartbreaking to see grandmothers and grandfathers receive no help simply because the doctor is not available that day. I want to change that so elderly people, especially those from disadvantaged communities, receive the serious medical attention they need and deserve. That is the main reason why I want to become a doctor.
There is one thing that I want to change in this world and that is equality. I want all people of different ages, races, and genders to have equal access to good healthcare. If God helps me and I become a qualified doctor, I will be helping people, regardless of their differences.
I completed primary school education at Raohang Primary School, situated in Botshabelo in the Free State. The learners of this school have the necessary foundation for all their educational experiences, which serves as the basis for their future success. This is all because of the committed teachers who want to see their learners achieve.
I matriculated at Senakangwedi Senior Secondary School in Botshabelo, Free State. The learners take on audacious problems, and bring imaginative, innovative approaches to solving them. They work collaboratively to advance knowledge and give meaningful contributions to our world. This is achieved with the help of committed and education loving teachers.
Physical science and mathematics are basic explanations of why the world is like it is. They involve more problem solving and deal mostly with calculations. I enjoy dealing with calculations and solving problems. What I also enjoy about the subjects is that they are not limited: every day something new is learnt, and this keeps the world of knowledge evolving.
People have a belief that mathematics and science subjects are for “smart people” or rather “brilliant kids”, which then makes them lose interest and see maths and science as difficult subjects, therefore they end up not doing well. The key to doing well in these subjects starts in our minds. They must develop a different mindset and start to believe that maths and science are for everyone, if you work hard every day to practice so that you understand the concepts well. I believe practice does not make perfect, but makes progress.
The last two leaves of the tree, grade 11 and 12, are not easy to fall off the tree, but in order to succeed, one must show determination and commitment. This means you study every day in order to make it. You must study even when nobody is watching – that is consistency and commitment.
When applying, choose a field that aligns with your abilities, strengths, and interests, so you can achieve good marks – the passion will follow. This will lead to success, and you will definitely enjoy your university life.
Consistency and commitment make an achiever. It makes a successful person. I believe that hard work only, does not make a person successful. There has to be commitment, so that you enjoy what you are doing. There must be consistency too, that drives you to work hard every day and yield meaningful and valuable products, which makes you an achiever.
You only live once so make it a meaningful one because you will not get a chance to create another life for yourself again. Life is a competitive affair so choose the right elements to win this competition.
I would like to say whole-heartedly, thank you to all my teachers, from primary to high school. This includes my family because they are my teachers of life. I thank all my teachers who shaped me to be the lady I am today. I thank you for the love and teachings and may you please pass the love and the teachings to the young ones after me so that they also become better versions of themselves.
It would be Mr Steve Harvey, an American comedian and television host. His journey and understanding of life are very inspirational. He is the definition of hard work that pays off. Harvey knows the wisdoms of life, which therefore makes him a very influential person. He has a good attitude, and he inspire conversations. He is humble and he respects people. He is indeed a motivator and having a conversation with him will help me grasp a few pearls of wisdom.
