Cherise is studying for a BSc (Chemistry and Mathematics) at North-West University (NWU). She matriculated at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley in the Northern Cape.

Explain why you chose the course/s you are studying?

I am passionate about science and maths. I enjoy these subjects because they require hard work and dedication, and they challenge me to do my best.

Who or what inspired you to pursue these studies?

My school teachers and my extra class teachers.

What would you like to see changed in the world, and how do you see yourself contributing to such a change?

I hope to see less poverty in the world, I aspire to contribute to such change by inventing methods to make electricity cheaper and more accessible through chemistry methods.

Where did you complete your schooling? (name of school and area where it is situated) Tell us a bit about this school and your teachers.

I attended Hoërskool Diamantveld in the Northern Cape province of South Africa (SA). Hoërskool Diamandveld is a Christian disciplined school, and the teachers inspired and motivated us to think outside the box and to find solutions to challenges.

What did you enjoy about physical science and maths at school?

I enjoy solving problems I initially struggled with but eventually finding the solutions.

Why do you think some people have problems doing well in maths and science? What advice do you have for school learners who struggle with these subjects?

People don’t always use the resources available to them. I advise you to watch videos to better your understanding and work hard every day.

Any tips for learners in Grades 11 and 12?

Attend extra classes and work through past papers.

What advice do you have for matriculants who have to apply for places in higher education institutions?

Focus on achieving the best marks you possibly can; more doors will then open for you, giving you more opportunities to choose from.

Consistency and dedication.

A message to South African youth in general?

Live according to your own values and you will accomplish your goals.

Thank you for preparing us, not for only the exams, but also for our future life challenges.

If you had ONE opportunity to speak directly to a very influential person, who would you choose and what would you say to them?

South African born Elon Musk – I would ask him how he would generate electricity in alternative ways, particularly within the field of chemistry.
