Artificial intelligence in STEM education
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education by creating new opportunities for personalised learning, enhanced problem-solving, AI literacy, and stronger connections between classroom learning and real-world applications. While AI technologies such as intelligent tutoring systems, learning analytics, virtual laboratories, and large language models have the potential to enrich teaching and prepare learners for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, significant questions remain regarding their effective implementation, ethical use, teacher preparedness, curriculum integration, and equitable access—particularly in South Africa. This discussion forum will bring together researchers, educators, policymakers, professional bodies, and industry experts to examine the latest research, share practical experiences and best practices, and explore how AI can be responsibly integrated into STEM education to improve learning outcomes and develop future-ready skills.
