Brilliants Programme

The London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) 2025

Since 2023, the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) has been partnering with the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) to send students of the NSTF Brilliants Programme to participate in this annual two-week summer camp. The experience provides students with a deeper insight into STEM and how science can be applied for the benefit of all humankind. (STEM = science, technology, engineering and mathematics.) The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) as a longstanding sponsor of the NSTF Brilliants Programme, took the opportunity to extend their support further to enrich the lives of a selected group to participate in the LIYSF.

Why participate in the LIYSF?

Promote science diplomacy and engagement

To enable South African students to discuss pressing global issues and scientific advancements in the world today.
To equip students to take their place in the world as global citizens.

Encourage and empower talented students

To provide South African students with a wealth of knowledge and empower them to further their careers to the highest level.
To offer South African students the opportunity to develop a network community engaged in supporting science in the African continent, as well as to meet and collaborate with other students from all around the world.

Exposure to world leaders and award winning scientists

To expose students to positive role models – students hear from leading scientists, including Nobel Prize Winners, from all over the world, who share their passion and knowledge about STEM, as well as their professional experiences. Award winning scientists from South Africa, such as the NSTF-South32 Awards, have also participated as speakers at the LIYSF.

How the LIYSF awardees are chosen?

LIYSF participants are selected from the list of students recognised every year by the NSTF Brilliants Programme for their top performance in physical science and mathematics in the Grade 12 examinations. A personal interview process is followed with each Brilliants student by the NSTF Selection Panel comprised of the NSTF Executive Director, the NSTF Youth Outreach Officer, and the NSTF Communications and Media Liaison Manager. The interviews assess the students’ passion for what they are studying, their confidence, as well as their ability to communicate. The number of awardees is also dependent on sponsorships received.

About the LIYSF

Longest running student science forum of its kind, held annually since 1959
This annual two-week event happens in July/August every year as a summer camp
15-day programme held at Imperial College London showcasing the latest scientific research in technology, artificial intelligence, cyber security, health, food, energy, climate change, pandemics, engineering & robotics etc
Approximately 500 students aged 16-21 years from all around the world (80 countries and territories) are selected each year based on talent
10 plenary lectures from Nobel Prize Laureates, academic and industry pioneers
4 specialist lectures from leading researchers (students can choose from 32 options, according to their field of interest)
3-day visits to top university departments, research centres and industrial sites across the UK – including Oxford and Cambridge Universities and industrial sites, like McLaren, Airbus and government facilities (students can choose from around 40 options, according to their field of interest)
Active social calendar with events designed to enable students to learn together and to give them the opportunity to meet and collaborate with other students from all around the world.
